Day 5 in Australia

holiday

Lyn had class in the morning, so she let me sleep in. YAY=) i planned to wake up early and have breakfast before she got back, but i was a sloth and was too comfy in her cosy bed to get out of it. So i think i only got up right before she came back, changed and washed up, and decided to try this cool little thing that we found at safeway the day before. I first heard of it from Inna when she was doing her marketing project last year, and it sounded to cool to be true, so when i saw it at safeway i knew i had to try it.

SipAhh Milk Flavouring Straws!

For variety, i got a packet with 5 different flavours: cookies and cream, mint choc, strawberry, chocolate and banana.
The straw was this hollow tube closed at both ends and filled with little pebbles of 'flavour', and when you suck the milk through the straw, the pebbles slowly dissolve into the milk, flavouring it. It was quite nice! I had the cookies and cream one.

After, we took a tram to Bourke St, had this egg chiffon thing which you see in the pictures for lunch. Looks like a huge piece of egg, but there's more! Underneath the egg is a huge portion of rice, char siew and roast pork. Too much for even the both of us to finish. But it was good! And had HK milk tea too, because the place was essentially a HK cafe. Oh, and sinful french toast!

Lyn had a meeting after lunch, so she left me to shop in the city. I walked from Bourke St to Flinders St, going into almost every shop and building but didn't really find much stuff to buy. However, i really needed the toilet and right before lyn came back to meet me i stumbled upon this little alley with rows of shops, but what caught my eye was this shop called David Medlow selling chocolates and colourful fruit jellies. The window display was so inviting that i just had to go in and ended up buying some jellies and honeycomb. =)

Trammed to Bridge Road, this shopping place that is supposed to have factory outlet shops. We actually came here on my first day for a short while. Met up with mel chew, sec sch friend, and her cousin Shawn came along too. He's in SMU now!

Thai for dinner, at Ying Thai.
Green curry, pad grapow, chicken wings, tom yum soup!

For an old (young) friend..

Yay for black!

Koko black, that is. Lyn, aaron and i went there for dessert after a dinner of souvlaki - a greek wrap somewhat akin to kebabs.. first time i'd heard of it! Aaron was in Melbourne visiting his sister for quite a long while, so we decided to just meet up before he flew back the next day. And i must say, Koko Black is amazing! And the best thing is that it's just round the corner from lyn's apartment.. barely 2 minutes away! Such a strategic location.. muahaha..

The interior. Rows and rows of chocolates neatly laid out in glass casings, shelves of products, a 'chocolate bar' where the hot chocolate and mochas are made.. the warm chocolatey interiors are already so inviting, what more the chocolate itself!

The prettily swirled hot chocolate, which is really by far one of the best hot chocolates i've had, save for the one in italy when we were escaping the rain, and we also ordered the mint chocolate martini - three scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream drizzled with a generous helping of mint sauce and accompanied with a pot of molten dark chocolate. Sounds too good to be true! There was also the ice chocolate, but i thought the hot chocolate was better. It was so rich that we couldn't finish everything. Stole a picture of the hot mocha off while it was waiting on the counter to be served.. So pretty too, with a sprinkling of chocolate shavings on top! ooh. So indulgent.

The last dinner in Australia was with Bianca and lyn at Kirribilli.. this restaurant near Milson's Point and round the corner from the pizza place we ordered from the night before. Squid ink pasta, yummy! Don't know why, but ever since i had a really good squid ink pasta at Da Paolo a few months back, i've been ordering that quite often. It was good catching up for a bit because she only came back the night before and didn't have time to spend shopping with us..

After dinner, we wanted to go get dessert, so we walked down to the foot of the harbour bridge, past the swimming pool complex, where there was a restaurant. However, when we said that we were there for dessert, they told us that "they were still serving dinner" so we couldn't get a seat -_- well, chasing away customers isn't a very smart thing to do. So anyway, Bianca introduced us to golden GAYtime icecream! When she told us about it, lyn and i were like.. what? GAYtime?? But it was pretty good, sweet ice cream covered with a layer of biscuit crumble. Happy faces, one and all.

Sunrise, Day 4

This is what greeted us when we woke up at 6 plus in the morning. Beautiful.
This is probably why they wake up so early everyday!

So, we packed up the last bits of stuff.. going there with a half empty bag and leaving with one that was stuffed.. Trained for the last time from Milson's Point to Wynyard then changed to the airport line. We were so sleepy that we fell asleep on the train. The domestic airport was small but efficient. Because we took virgin airlines, there were portals for quick check ins: just type in the details and out comes the ticket! No need for long queues. And the terminal had a large area with shops and food stalls, but we were too busy with out Macdonald's breakfast to have time to walk around the shops. The plane ride was about an hour long, quite turbulent. And for the swaku me, we didn't need to check passports or customs to get out of the domestic terminal. How cool!

Back in Melbourne
We took a cab home, unpacked, did laundry (so fun! i'm how domestic), slacked around. Had a chicken panini sandwich from the animal Orchestra with a pesto and mayo dressing. Yummy, because we were hungry and waiting along the pavement in the cold. And i went to the Melbourne Uni with lyn to attend some classes for fun! A derivatives tutorial and international finance lecture. Well, lessons are lessons, and lessons make me fall asleep! But the best part was walking around the uni and taking in the quaintness of it all.

Back home in Singapore, you really don't get the same feeling of old, historic buildings, large sprawling spaces, students lying on the green, superduper green grass, stuff like that. Everything's just so pretty! And if the weather was better, the pictures would have turned out even better because there would have been so much sunlight. And being such a big uni, they have so many eating outlets and cafes to choose from, unlike poor me. First time exploring a campus like this, and they have a huge library too! I guess the only downside is that the facilities are older.

Chi-chi High Tea

Dear ann made a special reservation here for the 3 of us to have high tea, in celebration of my first time in Australia and Lyn's 21st Birthday.

The cakes, pastries and sandwiches on the 3-tiered platter were delicious, but most amazing was the scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam, accompanied with a pot of English Breakfast Tea.

Full, satiated and happy girls :)

Now, after all the jumping down by the Rocks, we needed to find our way back to the city for some high tea. And the logical place to go for directions would be the visitor's centre. There, lyn and i had to find a toilet, and while walking past, i saw a colourful, pretty little shop..selling something that i had wanted to see. And i wanted to see how it was made, having only seen a short clip of the process on those display televisions at Best Denki and the likes, showing you how sharp the tv was. So since at that moment they were about to make a new batch, i made the 2 girls stay and watch the demonstration with me!

So i guess it's quite obvious what they're making now, but we were so fascinated during the whole process that we took many pictures of the guys in the act. And who would think that huge chunks of different coloured malleable sugar pieces that became a giant sausage would end up in tiny cylindrical strips? And at the end, i think they chopped it into thousands of little pieces once it hardened slightly. But the most amazing thing was what it looked like close up..

It was so cool. At the start, he told us he would make one with the Sydney harbour bridge on it, but we couldn't imagine how it would turn out because it looked so different BIG. It's really so pretty though! We were so excited, ooh-ing and aah-ing, that the sweet man gave each of us a heart shaped lollipop from some of the pulled candy rope, and we went mad taking pictures that they invited us behind the counter for a picture with them and their tools. :)

Pictures from the candy shop! i love the pretty colours.

We were still very fascinated with the lollis after we left the shop, and because it was freshly made, it was still nice and warm. Isn't the combination of colours just so nice? Sadly, we couldn't finish the whole thing because it was too much! Still, they did make our day =)

Day 3 - L'Opera House

  • Aug. 26th, 2007 at 7:17 PM
holiday
The night before, we stayed up later chit chatting, joined by Richard when he'd finished his homework. We think he was secretly enjoying our company! And we teased him, saying that we'd go down to his school and wait outside the gates till he was done and then pick him up.. and if he was thinking of escaping, we'd plant one girl at each entrance so we wouldn't miss him.. but we didn't! Anyway, Bianca came back from skiing real late, so we only managed to say hi and catch up a teeny bit before everyone went to bed. Richard woke us at 8 before he left for school, but we lazed around and only got up a while later.

Took a while in the huge bathroom getting ready to go out.. Although lyn and my outfits were coordinated, we didn't tell ann what we were going to wear, but in the end all three of us ended up in dresses over black tights, and someone commented that we look as if we shared clothes from the same wardrobe. I really like lyn's dress that i'm wearing, it's so cute!

Anyway, the weather was really great, so our plan was to take the walk from Milson's Point all the way across the Harbour Bridge. It looked like a long way (about 25 minutes?), but because we were busy taking pictures and admiring the view, it didn't feel so long. The other two are so used to the cold that they went out in just one layer, while i still had my jacket on for most of the time, even with the sun shining down on us.

The pictures should speak a thousand words, it's just too hard to describe the view. The Opera House and the houses in the distance, then the financial district on the other side, behind The Rocks.

After crossing the bridge, we ended up at The Rocks, which is Sydney's oldest preserved colonial district, on the shores of the Sydney Harbour. That's why we saw groups of children having field trips there. The Aussie school uniforms are just so cute! Tha's me and lyn with the 'Opera House' there in the last picture =p

And the best way to start the morning? Pancakes on the Rocks! One sweet, one savoury. The sweet one was chocolate pancakes with chocolate ice cream, custard and fresh strawberries drizzled with chocolate sauce, while the savoury one was with scrambled eggs, bacon, freshly whipped butter and maple syrup. Yummy! We were so so full after that..

After breakfast, we walked down to the harbour edge, right opposite the Sydney Opera House. Above shows the pictures from a 360 degree angle. So different, modern vs. quaint. The modern looking glass building is a restaurant which looks really inviting, offering a great view of the Harbour. Chris said she had breakfast there when she was in Sydney.. nice!

The mandatory jumping shots with the Opera House in the background. We took SO many! I think all the people having breakfast there and the other tourists probably thought we were quite mad, screaming and jumping for our lives. Whee!! But the setting was just idyllic. =)

What happened after that deserves a post of its own because it really made our day!

Just a glimpse of our living conditions during those two nights in Sydney. Absolutely lovely, nothing lacking.

A big study, a tv room with floor to celing bookshelves that's something i've always wanted in my home, long passageways lined with art pieces, tasteful photographs of my cousin's childhood, a spacious living and dining area, and a clean, high-tech kitchen. Nice!

A little pyjama party before bed. =) Richard James trying hard to study.

Happy Birthday Dear Richard James

  • Aug. 19th, 2007 at 9:33 PM
birthdays
We picked Ann up after her 3 hour drive and then squeezed with the evening crowd back to Milson's Point. We wanted to go out for dinner, to celebrate the 3 of us being in Australia, together, and I wanted to get Richard J to come along since we were, after all, staying at his place and he was going to be home alone. On the phone, he gave excuses that he had leftovers to eat, homework to do, etcetc. So we decided to go home and convice him to come out with us. Back home he told me "Hey, aunty mabel gave me $200 today for my birthday!" And i was like, oh.. right, so when's your birthday? And he goes.. TODAY? So after that he definitely HAD to have dinner with us! How can you spend your birthday eating leftovers and doing homework? Too sad.

We wrapped ourselves in our warm things, then walked a few minutes to this stretch of shops that Richard took us to. Quite a few restaurants around there! Another reason why his place is so lovely.. it's so convenient! We decided to order take-out pizza, and since there was a deli nearby, we went in and came out with loads of snacks! We wanted to surprise Richard with a cake, but he didn't really eat cake, so while i went to the alcohol shop with him a few doors down to get him booze (typical teenage boys.. he was so sad that i didn't get him anything from DFS at the airport) as a birthday present and also because he was underaged, the girls secretly bought ice cream and a candle that would play the birthday song when lit.

So why does it look like the birthday boy is lighting the candle on his own surprise birthday ice cream? The girls didn't have a lighter, so lyn was planning to use the stove top to light it, but surprise surprise.. it was an ELECTRIC stove! So we had to ask richard for matches. -_- Anyway, i think he was quite surprised and happy! Instead of spending his birthday alone (parents and sister were away skiing), he got 3 girls, pizza, snacks and ice cream!

The birthday candle very enthusiastically played out the birthday song, even after the flame had been extinguished. We were trying to figure out how to make the sound go away, but twisting the base round and round didn't help. In the end.. i ripped the candle from the base. But i thought these candid shots were pretty funny.

AND. presenting the best way to eat timtams by our timtam guru - Lynette Ng! First, get a nice bowl of cold milk. Then, bite off both ends of the timtam, and use it as a straw to slurp up the milk! Once the timtam is soaked, eat it the normal way. Yummy, because of the cold milk! mmmm..

Sydney Fish Market

Took the train to Wynyard, one stop away, then had a nice morning walk to meet Anthony. Along the way, we spotted a krispy kreme store and just had to buy one for the fun of it. And that was the only Original Glazed Krispy Kreme i had the whole time i was in Australia. And i shared it too! Think the novelty has worn off already. After that, it was a nice, long stroll, past Darling Harbour where they were having a huge boat show, and then onward a bit more to the Fish Market. It was a good half an hour walk at least i think! But the great thing is that it's not humid, and the air is cool, so walking is really no sweat! (literally and figuratively.)

The Sydney Fish Market wasn't listed on any of the tourist guides.. you know, like those 'Top places to eat or see on your holiday' kinda thing, cos we couldn't find any directions to get there, but it was really crowded anyway! So we had the Fisherman's Basket - morsels of battered fish, calamari rings and chips, fresh FRESH salmon and tuna sashimi (first time i tried tuna, and with wasabi no less!), huge bright orange prawns and oysters. Sitting outdoors under the sun with the cool wind, sipping white wine out of little plastic wine cups.. perfect!

The only not-so-nice things were the seagulls. They kept swooping around, thankfully not stealing any of our food. But horror of horrors, one of them SHAT ON MY BAG! arg.. and i only realised it a few minutes later in the toilet. I was lucky i didn't unknowingly smear it on my clothes or something. ewwwww.

So after our very filling seafood lunch, we walked past Darling Harbour again, where there was a really funny busker who talked ALOT and took too long to get onto his unicycle, then to Chinatown/Paddy's Market, and the shopping centre above it. I managed to score Sass and Bide Jeans for A$129, which i think is a steal! And also made my first of many visits to Supre. haha. We had time before we had to pick ann up from Central Station where she was coming down from Canberra to meet us, so we walked (again) to Anthony's apartment to check it out and have a rest. It gets very chilly at night when the winds blow!

Day 2 - Sydney!

So after that loooong bus ride, we reached Sydney around 8 am. Took the train from Central Station to Milson's Point, 3 stops away, and walked about 2 minutes to my cousin's apartment. The apartment is SO near the train station and so convenient! The apartment is amazing. It's better than a hotel, gorgeous gorgeous view, and because my aunt and uncle were away skiing, she let us use the master bedroom! And the best thing was that the weather was great! Blue skies, cool weather, low humidity..we were so excited. I felt that in Sydney, lyn, ann and i were really tourists because we all didn't have to worry about school, so we did the whole touristy take-many-photos thing, whereas in Melbourne, i was the tourist and lyn was the host.

So, we were greeted by Richard James who woke up early to let us in, ooh-ed and aah-ed at the apartment and took many pictures! This is the view from the apartment..

It's really practically next to the Harbour bridge, with unobstructed views of the harbour, boats, and the Luna Park below. I've only heard my cousins talk about their apartment since they moved in maybe 2 years ago? So finally getting to see it was like finally putting a face to a name. And it was very nice seeing my cousin again. =)

My aunt was so sweet, she put out bath and hand towels for us, and even prepared materials on Sydney and a map for us! We took advantage of the master bedroom toilet with the huge mirror and two sinks to wash up after our long journey, then went out to meet Lyn's cousin Anthony, who was going to bring us to the Sydney Fish Market for lunch.

In Australia, i walked ALOT. But the weather was so good, it made walking quite a breeze. And we picked up an original glazed krispy kreme along the way too! These are some of the buildings we passed by.. so it was about 15 minutes walk to meet Anthony, then another 20 minutes walk to the Fish Market for lunch! We walked past Darling Harbour on the way to the Fish Market, where they were having a huge boat show. Everything just looks so much nicer when the sun is shining.

Escapades Down Under

Day 1 - Touchdown in Melbourne

It was my first time ever travelling alone, and also my first time going to Australia. Pretty amazing, considering that i have cousins living in Sydney but never been there in the past 20 years. It was fun though, feeling very independent browsing in the airport shops after entering, and then walking to the gate to board the plane. Thankfully i wasn't scared or anything. Happened to sit next to this cute old aussie couple and the lady was really friendly, asking me where i was going, what i was going to do and telling me a bit about her own travels and how she thought Singapore Airlines was really good. And i watched Just follow Law on the plane! So glad i didn't spend money to buy the dvd.

Touched down slightly early, got through customs with no problem, and had to wait a bit for lyn and jason to come pick me up. It was colder than i expected, especially with the wind, so lucky lyn brought me a thicker jacket! We went for breakfast at a little cafe along Brunswick, then to lyn's apartment to rest and pack for sydney (our 12 hour bus journey!). I really love her apartment cos it's so spacious, and the big windows let in lots of sunlight! In the day time, she opens the windows partially to let in the cold air, so it's natural air-conditioning, free!

Our packing was quite an adventure. We didn't want to bring too much, so we decided on two jackets, black and brown, that we would interchange. Then, we picked out 3 outfits each, one for each day, that would match the jackets, and then a brown and a black bag to go. SO vain!

In the afternoon, we went to Bridge road to shop. Look at the alpaca! There were 3 of them in the store window, and the shop was selling shawls and stuff made from their wool. They were cute, in a weird way.. We only managed to cover half of it because we had to go for an early dinner before catching our bus at 8pm. One thing great about Lynette's place is that it's a one minute walk to Lygon St, where there are many restaurants - italian, greek, thai, asian etc, cafes, and shops along it. So we walked to Mercadante for Italian. Salmon and mushroom pasta, and for dessert we shared their special nutella pizza, pizza crust oozing with nutella, and drizzled with more nutella on top! Did you know that nutella comes from Italy?

The Bus Ride
A 12-hour bus ride is no joke. This is not grassland express with comfy reclinable armchairs and your personal tv screen, but those normal primary school excursion buses. I was armed with a woolly scarf and a shawl, which came in handy as a blanket. It was ab 8 hour ride to Canberra, then 3 hours on to Sydney. After around 4 hours on the road, the driver stopped at a rest stop, leaving the bus door open for people to get in and out. At 12 am! And we decided to stay on the bus, which got increasingly colder and colder. After that, i was so uncomfortable cos my toes were frozen and it took really long for me to fall asleep. But in the morning, i watched a really beautiful sunrise through bleary half-open eyes. It  felt so good to finally get off the bus after Sydney, and it was warmer too, but i really felt like i had half  forgotten how to walk from sitting so long.

The new mall at Clarke Quay? Don't go there. Unless you have a craving for japanese. There are many many japanese restaurants there, some little shops selling food in the basement, but little of anything else. The shops that are open give me the feel that i'm in a newer far east plaza, and the layout of the building is just so confusing that i can't be bothered to walk from one end to the other. And oh, the carpark. Imagine going up, round and round and round this claustrophobic spiral, having to watch both sides of the car to make sure you don't scratch/hit anything, to the 6th floor to find a small carpark, where you park on the 8th floor and then realise that the lifts are not walking so you have to take the escalator all the way down.

The only reason i might go back there next time (taking the mrt/walking) would probably be to try the much talked about ramen restaurant.

And, the one saving grace was the view from the carpark in the evening light, just as we were about to leave for home.

It's quite nice, isn't it? And it was a hot sunny day, so the evening sky was beautifully clear.

I'm so glad that it's the holidays so that i have the time to do whatever i want (almost), without feeling the need to go study or do work! And even though there's work, i look forward to lunch and 530 when i can go home cos i don't have to bring any of the work with me.. what's better to enjoy the holidays with than yummy food! =) i love having relaxing breakfasts.. so one Saturday, spencer and i headed to da paolo gastronomia to check out the spread.

I just felt so happy and free walking in, because the layout, decor, and spread of cakes, pastries, bread, pasta sauces and all were just so inviting. Had a hard time deciding what to order because everything looked so good! And because it was a nice morning, we decided to sit outdoors and just enjoy having the time. It's such an expat place though, i think we were the only asians there at the time.. but i really would want to stock my home with all the tantalising stuff on display =)

Smoked salmon pizza, roasted chicken sandwich.. a valrhona chocolate scone and some sparkling San Pellegrino to top it off!

Another breakfast
One of my favourite places to go for pancakes is at Cedele, because i haven't found many places that actually serve good ones. Blueberry pancakes with vanilla butter! And macs breakfast pancakes do not qualify! But i find these quite fluffy, and sweet enough, plus it even comes with sausages and some mixed greens to erm.. make up for the maple syrup.. The scrambled eggs, rosti and mushrooms are pretty good too. I love sauteed mushrooms.

There. Go try! I only wish we had more yummy breakfast places around..

The annual ASOC Gala Dinner was held a week after exams ended, and on the day itself Hilda and I decided to get some pampering done to our hair. I had actually wanted a simple wash and blow, but Willie decided to put my hair up for me instead, and it turned out really pretty! Hilda had a nice haircut though.. sadly, you can't do much styling for short hair..

It was really funny though, cos after i got my hair washed, they started putting it up in these giant rollers.. and i was thinking omy what are they going to do to my hair.. but thankfully it was only to smoothen it or something.. By the time our hair was done it was quite late, so we had to rush back to my place, get our stuff, then to hilda's to get ready, and then call a cab to get to the hotel on time. wooo.. spent alot on cab fares that night!

Anyway, pictures..

Summer has finally begun!

After a really hectic term that passed by really quickly, i'm so glad that the summer holidays are finally here. Although i don't have much of a holiday, cos i start internship next week. =S Anyway, because chris starts her third year of medicine the same time i start my internship, this holiday is also for us to spend more time together before we can only see each other on.. weekends. and maybe nights. So, we went for a nice late breakfast at Corduroy and Finch this morning. Poached eggs benedict with honey baked ham, Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Yummy! Look at the bread and butter. The butter was soft and had the consistency of stiff whipped cream, piped into the tiny ramekin. Very very filling but satisfying.

In order to take advantage of whatever sun there was going to be today, we went back to her place for some swimming and tanning. I haven't swum in ages, and being cooped up in the library so much, i was really in need of a tan. Thankfully, the sun graced us with its presence for a bit, before the dark grey clouds started rolling in and we had to get out. I was just so happy that the holidays were finally here and that we could play without feeling guilty that we weren't studying! But swimming makes you so tired after.. no idea why.

After a bit of a rest, we went to holland v for some vietnamese pho, and checked out pantry magic. It's this store that sells really nice cooking equipment, like colourful cooking utensils, copper pots and pans, silicon spatulas and moulds, pie tins, etc. in a nice bright setting, making us feel like we were in the set of a Martha Stewart cooking show or something. Nice! Yay for a relaxing day. Happy summer holidays!

Went for a gathering at Clara's house, where we had pizza hut for dinner. Yummy spicy drumlets! We missed hilda and weiming, because they were the reigning chicken wing king and queen, but xuan ming took over and had many many drumlets for dinner. Clara's got a really nice entertainment room at home, so we enjoyed ourselves lazing around, playing bridge and the guys had a cushion fight. Screaming like boys, very man. Had to leave early while they continued playing mahjong =( cos we had to go support weims dancing hip hop at the sports bash. Haha. It was pretty fun, nice because the place wasn't that packed and we had room to breathe, and the performances were entertaining. Sorry weims, but i think boons enjoyed the penthouse boys the best! Lotsa screaming and dancing! Two great parties in one night!

Kelvin organised a surprise party for hilda at the old costa sands chalet at East Coast. Well, it was a surprise until we realised Hilda was in the emailing invite list and she replied to let us know. Another surprise that didn't manage to happen! But all in all, i think hilda did have fun. The frisbee people bought her a birthday paddle, and all her friends had to smack her then sign on it as a sign of friendship. She was really reluctant to get whacked, but in the end, everyone had a go. I missed most of it, but when i got back i witnessed some really HARD smacks! pooor girl, she said her butt was all red after that. Anyway, i'm pleased that i managed to get her at least one thing that she liked and was actually thinking of getting!

Happy birthday dear, and thanks for being such a great friend!
